No Consistent Trading Method = No Edge
Edge is not a feeling after two wins. Edge is a repeatable process you can describe, execute the same way, and score honestly. Without consistency, you don't have an edge to evaluate — only anecdotes.
The symptoms
- Monday is supply-demand. Tuesday is indicator confluence. Wednesday is "what that guy on YouTube said."
- Rules change after every losing trade ("I'll wait for confirmation next time" — until the next FOMO entry).
- You can't explain your last five trades with the same checklist.
- Backtests (or forward tests) never finish because the method mutates mid-sample.
- You ask "does SMC work?" before you ask "did I apply one definition of SMC for 50 closed trades?"
Inconsistency disguises itself as open-mindedness.
Why it happens
Markets are noisy. Noise punishes small samples. When a method has a normal losing streak, an inconsistent trader doesn't learn — they replace. The new method then inherits the same impatience.
There is also social pressure. Discord, Twitter/X, Telegram — endless alternate playbooks. Sampling ideas is fine for education. Swapping your live rules every session is not research; it's churn.
At ZUPIRUS, the public methodology is deliberately narrow: structure, BOS/CHoCH, liquidity, order blocks, FVGs; D1/H4/H1 roles; max 1% risk; results only from closed statuses in a fixed CSV schema. That narrowness is the point. You cannot claim an edge on a process you refuse to hold still.
The fix (checklist)
- Write a one-page method. Instruments, timeframes, setup definition, invalidation, risk %, management, "do not trade if…" list. If it needs a novel, it's not ready.
- Freeze for a sample. Agree in writing: no rule changes until N closed trades (pick N before you start; keep it realistic for your style). During the freeze, you may skip trades; you may not invent new entry types.
- One glossary. If you use BOS, define the swing you break. If you use FVG, define the three-candle rule the same way every time. Our course lessons exist so VIP members share one vocabulary.
- Score process and outcome separately. A valid stop-out is a process success and an outcome loss. A rule-break winner is a process failure.
- Change protocol. After the sample, you may change one variable at a time, then restart the sample counter. No kitchen-sink redesigns.
- Public accountability help. Post your rules to yourself in a private note or pinned journal. Future-you needs something firmer than memory.
Hypothetical expectancy sketch (not a promise, not a backtest claim): if you risk 1R to make 2R and your true win rate were 40% on a stable method, rough expectancy per trade ≈ (0.4×2) − (0.6×1) = +0.2R. If you never keep the method stable, that arithmetic is cosplay — you don't have a rate to plug in.
Takeaway
Without a frozen, written method long enough to measure, you don't lack luck — you lack an edge definition.
